Incidence of Drug Trafficking and its Socio-Economic Impact in the Colombian Caribbean Region

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present a preliminary analysis of the impact of drug trafficking in the Caribbean region, its effects on the socioeconomic conditions of its inhabitants, and the influence of the trade in toxic substances intended for human consumption. This phenomenon involves a wide range of factors contributing to regional instability. The analysis is based on the historical and natural framework of the “Colombian Caribbean Region,” understood from geographical, economic, and cultural perspectives. Within this context, common patterns can be observed regarding insecurity, diplomatic relations, and the social and economic effects resulting from the scourge of drug trafficking. The Caribbean region has regularly been used by members of drug-trafficking organizations from across the country due to its coastal and border location, which facilitates the export of illicit substances and the entry of weapons and chemical precursors. This article also provides a description and analysis of the armed actors that have operated in this area of the country, which has become an established platform within the dynamics of the drug-trafficking trade. Likewise, the article offers a reflection from a political-military perspective, considering how the impact of drug trafficking on the region has led to the development of strategies aimed at minimizing this illicit economy and its influence on the populations of the Colombian Caribbean.
