The Influence of Maritime Drug Trafficking in Australia and Its Economic Impact

This research aims to identify the economic influence of maritime drug trafficking within the drug trafficking value chain in Australia. Using a quantitative methodology, geopolitical analysis, and the collection of information from open sources, the study examines how drug trafficking influences the Australian market, particularly in relation to the high prices of illicit drugs in the country. The study concludes that, despite being located thousands of kilometers from the Latin American coast, Australia occupies a strategic position within the global drug trafficking value chain. Evidence gathered from various information sources indicates that the profits generated by the high prices of cocaine and synthetic drugs, the long trafficking routes from Latin America, and the various domestic routes used for drug distribution make Australia an attractive target within the global illicit drug economy and an important destination in the worldwide drug trafficking value chain.
