Abstract

This review article examines the incorporation of gender perspective in the formulation of defense and security policies and strategies of the Colombian state. It explores the historical background of women's contributions in the military context, identifies findings from the insertion of gender perspective in military institutions, and describes contributions from this perspective to strengthen the exercise of national security and defense. The methodology used was an exhaustive documentary review of national and international sources. The results show significant advances in the inclusion of women in the armed forces and in the integration of gender perspective in security policies, but also reveal persistent challenges. It is concluded that the effective incorporation of gender perspective in security and defense is both a challenge and an opportunity to improve operational effectiveness and equity in Colombian military institutions.
