Numerous evidences confirm that the Earth is warming, including: warmer days and nights, warming of the ocean, reduction in cold weather, snow cover in the northern hemisphere is decreasing at a rapid pace, retreating glaciers, change in rainfall patterns, rising sea levels, decreasing sea ice in the Arctic Circle, ocean acidification; Previously impeded routes are now opening up, offering the potential to connect international markets via shorter polar routes. Global climate change is causing permafrost to thaw and the Arctic Ocean ice sheet to shrink, making the vast mineral deposits in this part of the world more accessible. The Arctic contains the world's vast reserves of natural resources: fresh water (20 %), estimated unexplored natural gas reserves (13 %), and oil reserves (30 %). The region is rich in non-ferrous and rare earth metals, gold, diamonds and hydrocarbons. China, a non-Arctic country, seeks to gain access to the resources and maritime routes of the Arctic to ensure and reinforce its military, economic and scientific rise.
