Abstract

The Port of Chancay, one of Peru's most ambitious infrastructure projects, promises to transform logistical and commercial dynamics in the South Pacific region. Designed to enhance connectivity with Asian markets and reduce export costs, this port also presents significant risks. The possibility of its exploitation by Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs) for drug trafficking has raised concerns due to the tendency of these networks to exploit high-traffic commercial ports. This study examines how the opening of this port could alter the dynamics of port and river drug trafficking in the South Pacific and Amazon Basin, highlighting the need for robust security strategies and inter-institutional coordination to mitigate these risks. Based on a review of recent cases and data, the article offers a predictive assessment of the Port of Chancay's impact on the region's legal and illegal trade.
