Strategic importance of San Andrés and Providence

Abstract

In the present work there is an analysis about the history and strategic importance that represents the Archipelago of San Andres, Providence and Saint Catalina for Colombia, during this analysis we will see the importance of the economy, military and the strategic that represents this archipelago, the problems of more significance to the territory in nowadays. From the problematic mentioned before, in our days the more important is the one coming from one of the eight border countries that have limit with Colombia in the Caribbean sea, this with outcome of the failure of the International Court of Justice about the dispute over the maritime limits between Colombia and Nicaragua, representing an increase in problems Social economic internal of this nation about the depredation in the fishing in normal areas that the islanders normally do, and also the exploitation of petroleum in the natural reserve of seaflower. Of the above we support this analysis with the theories of history speakers in the maritime doctrine as the sir Alfred Thaylor Mahan, whose theories they have had a great influence in over the time and show the significant strategic that has the control over the seas.
